What do I need on the final?
How a weighted grade works
Each score is multiplied by its weight, the results are added up and then divided by the total weight. With homework at 92% worth 20%, quizzes at 85% worth 30% and tests at 78% worth 50%, the grade is (92 × 20 + 85 × 30 + 78 × 50) ÷ 100 = 82.9%, a B− on the scale below. The tests pull it down most because they count for half of the grade.
If the weights you have entered don't add up to 100, for example because the final hasn't happened yet, the grade is worked out from what you have so far: homework 92% (20) and quizzes 85% (30) give 87.8% across the 50% of the grade that is done. Points work too: 45/50 is read as 90%.
What you need on the final
The required score is (goal − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With 85% now and a final worth 30%:
| Grade you want | Score needed on the final |
|---|---|
| 90% (A−) | 101.67%, not possible without extra credit |
| 85% (B) | 85% |
| 80% (B−) | 68.33% |
| 70% (C−) | 35% |
To keep your current grade, you need the same score on the final as your grade now. Every point above or below it moves the course grade by the final's weight: here, 10 more points on the final adds 3 points to the course.
Final exam score needed for a B−
The score you need on the final to finish with 80%, for different grades going in and different final weights. The heavier the final, the more it can rescue a low grade, and the more it can sink a high one.
| Grade now | Final 20% | Final 25% | Final 30% | Final 40% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70% | over 100 | over 100 | over 100 | 95% |
| 75% | 100% | 95% | 91.67% | 87.5% |
| 80% | 80% | 80% | 80% | 80% |
| 85% | 60% | 65% | 68.33% | 72.5% |
| 90% | 40% | 50% | 56.67% | 65% |
Final exam score needed to pass
The same table for finishing with 60%, the lowest passing grade (D−) on the usual US scale. Many schools and courses set a higher pass mark, often 65% or 70%, so check yours and type it in the calculator above.
| Grade now | Final 20% | Final 25% | Final 30% | Final 40% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70% | 20% | 30% | 36.67% | 45% |
| 75% | 0 | 15% | 25% | 37.5% |
| 80% | 0 | 0 | 13.33% | 30% |
| 85% | 0 | 0 | 1.67% | 22.5% |
| 90% | 0 | 0 | 0 | 15% |
Letter grade scale
This is the scale most US schools use. Some schools round, start the A at 93 or don't use plus and minus grades, so check your syllabus.
| Letter | Percent | Letter | Percent |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100 | C | 73–76 |
| A | 93–96 | C- | 70–72 |
| A- | 90–92 | D+ | 67–69 |
| B+ | 87–89 | D | 63–66 |
| B | 83–86 | D- | 60–62 |
| B- | 80–82 | F | below 60 |
| C+ | 77–79 |
Questions
How are class grades calculated?
Most teachers use a weighted average: each score is multiplied by its weight, the results are added, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. Homework at 20% and exams at 80%, for example, means exams count four times as much.
Can I use it as a weighted grade calculator?
Yes. Type each score with its weight, such as 20 for 20%. If the weights so far add up to less than 100, the result is your grade so far. Leave every weight blank to count all scores equally.
Does it give a letter grade?
Yes. The result shows the letter next to the percent, using the common US scale in the table on this page. Some schools draw the lines differently, so check your syllabus if you are close to a cut-off.
How do I work out the grade on a test?
Divide the points you got by the points possible and multiply by 100. 42 out of 50 is 84%, a B. You can also type 42/50 straight into a score box and the calculator does the division.
My teacher uses points, not weights. What do I enter?
Enter each score as points, such as 18/20 or 45/50, and leave every weight empty. If the class grade is total points earned out of total points possible, enter the totals on one row instead, for example 412/460, since big assignments count for more in a points system.
Why is my grade here slightly different from the school's?
Schools often round at a set step, drop the lowest quiz or have categories inside categories. Check the syllabus for those rules; the weighted average here is the plain version of the calculation.
What grade do I need on my final to pass?
Put your current grade, the final's weight and your pass mark into the final exam box above. As a guide, with 70% now and a final worth 30%, you need 36.67% on the final to finish with 60%, and 70% to finish with 70%. The tables above cover other cases.
What happens to my grade if I get a zero on the final?
Your course grade drops to your current grade times the share that isn't the final. With 85% now and a final worth 30%, a zero leaves 85 × 0.7 = 59.5%, an F. With a final worth 20% it would be 68%, a D+. Some schools also require a minimum score on the final, so check the syllabus.
Can I turn the result into a GPA?
Yes. Use the letter for each class in the GPA calculator, along with each class's credits.
