Lorem ipsum generator

Pick how much placeholder text you need, then copy it into your design or document.

What lorem ipsum is

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used as stand-in text while a page, poster or app screen is being designed. Because the words look like real text but don't mean anything to most readers, people judge the layout, fonts and spacing instead of reading the copy. It has been used by printers since at least the 1500s, and it spread to every desktop publishing program in the 1980s.

The words come from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a book on ethics that Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The familiar opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet", is a cut-up of a sentence that begins "Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet", roughly "nor is there anyone who loves pain itself". Letters and words were dropped and shuffled, so the result isn't proper Latin.

How this generator works

Each sentence has 8 to 16 words picked at random from 100 traditional lorem ipsum words, with a comma placed in longer ones. Each paragraph has 4 to 7 sentences. That gives paragraphs of 32 to 112 words, about 66 on average, close to the paragraphs in a typical article, so the text wraps and breaks the way real copy would. The classic "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" sentence, when you keep it, is added in front as it is. Press New text for a fresh mix.

Tick Wrap paragraphs in <p> tags when you're pasting into HTML or a content management system. Leave it off for Word, Google Docs, Figma or a slide.

Pick Characters when a field has a hard limit: 160 for a text message, about 155 for a search snippet, 280 for a post. The text comes out at exactly that length and ends with a full stop, so you can test whether a box, a button or a card breaks at the limit. Paste it into the character counter to see how the same text measures against the X and text message rules.

How much text each setting gives

We ran each setting 3,000 times with the classic opening kept and noted the shortest and longest result. Paragraphs and sentences vary because sentence length is random; words and characters always come out exact.

SettingWordsCharactersFits
1 paragraph53 to 122343 to 892A card, a product blurb
3 paragraphs146 to 305984 to 2,203A blog post preview, an About section
5 paragraphs249 to 4581,766 to 3,322A full article page
5 sentences51 to 81333 to 622A short description
50 words50285 to 404A meta description draft, a testimonial
150 characters22 to 27150A search snippet test
160 characters23 to 29160One text message
280 characters36 to 48280One post on X

Two things follow from the table. First, if a layout has to hold an exact amount, pick Words or Characters rather than paragraphs: three paragraphs can be twice as long one time as the next. Second, 50 words of lorem ipsum runs to roughly 6 to 8 characters a word with the space, a little longer than English, so a box sized with lorem ipsum will have some room to spare for real copy. When you switch the type, the count resets to a sensible starting point (3 paragraphs, 5 sentences, 50 words or 150 characters), and your last settings are kept for next time once you change them.

Tips for using placeholder text

Match the real length. If a product description will be about 40 words, fill the box with 40 words rather than three paragraphs, or the design will look emptier or fuller than it will at launch. Use real headlines where you can, since headings are short and change the look of a page more than body text does. And check that no lorem ipsum is left before you publish: search the page for "lorem" as the last step.

Questions

Can I use this text for free?

Yes. Lorem ipsum is based on a text over 2,000 years old and nobody owns it. Use it in any project, personal or commercial.

Why not use real text instead?

Real text makes people read and comment on the words. Placeholder text keeps the discussion on the design until the final copy is ready.

How many characters long can the text be?

Up to 20,000 characters in Characters mode, up to 5,000 words in Words mode, and up to 100 paragraphs or sentences. That is enough to fill a long article several times over, and short enough that a phone browser stays responsive.
