Word unscrambler

Type the letters you have. Every word they make shows up, longest first.

Runs in your browser. Your letters are not sent to a server.

Use ? for a blank tile, up to 2. Up to 15 letters.

How it works

Type the letters on your rack or in the puzzle, in any order. The unscrambler checks every word in its list from 2 letters up to the number of letters you typed, and keeps the ones you can spell with those letters, each letter used no more times than you have it. Words are grouped by length with the longest first, since the longest word usually scores most or solves the puzzle.

A ? stands for a blank tile and can be any letter. You can use up to two. Starts with and Ends with keep only words that begin or end with those letters, which helps when a word has to fit next to tiles already on the board or into a crossword gap.

Examples

Real results from the unscrambler for a few sets of letters:

LettersWords foundLongest words
LISTEN906 letters: elints, enlist, inlets, listen, silent, tinsel
RETAIN876 letters: ratine, retain, retina
CRATE415 letters: caret, carte, cater, crate, react, recta, trace
PUZZLE86 letters: puzzle; then only one 4-letter word, pule
TEA?19952 four-letter words, from abet and bate to date and beta
STARE, starts with S125 letters: stare

Letters that repeat or are rare cut the list sharply: PUZZLE has two Z's and makes only 8 words, while the common letters in LISTEN make 90, six of them using all six letters. One blank tile changes everything: TEA alone makes 9 words, but TEA? makes 199, because the blank can stand for any of 26 letters. Starts with and Ends with are the quickest way to cut a long list down to the words that fit your board.

The word list

Words come from ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon), a list of about 173,000 English words that was released into the public domain and is used by many word games. It includes plurals and verb forms, but not proper nouns, abbreviations or words with hyphens or apostrophes. Official tournament dictionaries differ slightly from it, so a word found here may not be accepted in every game, and a few recent words may be missing.

The list is split into files by word length and only the lengths you need are downloaded, the first time you unscramble, so the page itself stays light.

Questions

Can I use it for any word game?

It works for any game where you make words from a set of letters: tile games, anagram puzzles, word jumbles in the newspaper and daily word puzzles. Each game has its own word list, so check a surprising word against the game's rules if it matters.

Why doesn't a word I know show up?

Either it needs a letter you don't have, or more copies of a letter than you typed, or it isn't in the ENABLE list, which leaves out proper nouns, abbreviations and many very new words. Add a ? to see what one more letter would open up.

Are my letters saved?

No. The search runs in your browser, and only the word list files are fetched from this site. Copy link puts your letters in the link if you want to share a puzzle.
